Heart Idioms

On the 14the of February the teacher of English introduced some “heart idioms” to us and explained that the best way to remember them is to try and make a story using the phrases. And so we did. We hope that our experience will inspire other students to try their hand at writing.

A list of idioms to be used:

At heart

By heart

Be the heart and soul of a company

Break somebody’s heart

Cry one’s heart out

False-hearted

Follow your heart

From the bottom of my heart

Have heart in one’s mouth

Speak heart to heart

To move somebody’s heart

To set one’s heart on

With half a heart

With heart and hand

Irina Efimova, Form 9

My friend is the heart and soul of our theatre club. She is always enthusiastic about everything dealing with theatre activities and learns her roles with heart and hand. It was just a stroke to see her in tears yesterday when she came to me to cry her heart out.

“What’s happened?”-I asked her trying to calm her down. “I was given a role which is to be learned by heart within one day. The role is so difficult, I am short of time, and I’m scared I won’t be able to cope with the task! If I don’t learn my part, it will break the heart of our producer. What should I do?”

After a little pause I answered with the words that came from the bottom of my heart.”You’ve always found a way out of the situation. Being a brave and willing person you’ll overcome the difficulty. Just imagine that the role is an interesting story you are going to tell your friends, “said I. After ourheart to heart talk she set her heart on learning the role.

Two days later I came to the theatre to see the first night. I had a heart in my mouth when my friend started speaking, as I wasn’t sure she would cope with the excitement. But she was at her best. This episode will always be in my heart as the sample of my friend’s courage and devotion to the theatre.

I made up my mind to find the following idioms in the songs I listen to. Here are some exstracts from the lyrics of the bands.

“Scorpions”-this is the time for yourself to be free

You gotta follow your heart!

This is the time in your life and it’s never too late

To see the light in the dark

You gotta follow your heart.

Jacob Wellfair. Set your heart on fire

Follow me, show burning desire,

Follow me, set your heart on fire,

Follow me, take your love, take your love,

Follow me high above, high above.

Evgeniy Ivanov, Form 11

My friend is the heart and soul of our company. I haven’t ever seen him grief- stricken or even just upset. But yesterday he looked very gloomy when we met at a café. He spoke his heart out to me when telling about awful quarrels with his parents. We were speaking heart to heart for a long time. I can imagine that not all parents would like to see their only son as a rock musician. To become it  is my friend’s greatest dream. We came to the conclusion that he should follow his heart and try to persuade his parents to give him a chance to become a musician.

Kate Ivkova, Form 8

I know a story about the girl whose heart was broken by one smile. She had a classmate who always paid compliments to her, tried to draw her attention to him, treated her to tasty things , etc. On St. Valentine ’s Day the girl set her heart on writing a rhyme to him. The words came from the bottom of her heart as she realized she had fallen in love with the boy. The next day she asked the boy to talk heart to heart and he agreed but with half a heart. She recited the poem by heart but it didn’t move the boy’s heart at all. He started giggling and the girl ran away. Things happen!
